A nice start to the month.

Thursday 1st September 2022.

My second Evergestis limbata of the year was a surprise.

The beginning of the month kicked off with another reasonable showing of moths this morning and as it is getting later in the morning (6.18am), it gives me a chance to get myself ready before embarking on another check on the moth box. Again, there were no new moths for the year, however, there were a few nice surprises which always put a smile on my face. Again, rather cool this morning (17 degrees centigrade) with a light north-easterly, it was a little overcast, which was a bonus really, as a Yellow Wagtail was flying around above me and eventually, I clocked it circling high overhead before it headed off west.

A trio of Underwings this morning. Top, Lesser Yellow Underwing, middle, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and bottom, Large Yellow Underwing.

There were a total of 127 moths of 35 species this morning and a couple of micros that still need to be ID’d and currently resting in their respective pots. Among the number, my second Evergestis limbata of the year was resting on the side of the moth box and Lesser Yellow Underwing are starting to increase. In fact, it was joined by two other species of Underwing, a rather tatty Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and a Large Yellow Underwing. Again, Pale Mottled Willow and Vine’s Rustic made up a lot of the moths and the micro moth, Gold Triangle, was my first of this species for a few months.

Gold Triangle.
