Monday 20th October 2025.
The high pressure dominating the weather last week had disappeared today and low pressure took its place and therefore, we on the south coast were hit with heavy rain and wind on and off throughout the day. I, personally, took a bit of a soaking a couple of times today as some areas were flooded, including the Bowling Green at Pembroke Road today.
Because of the heavy rain last night, I decided not to put the Moth Box on, but it will be going on tonight.
Pembroke Road, Old Portsmouth:
A superb male Peregrine this afternoon made standing in the rain all worth it as it powered its way over Pembroke Road, then over Governor’s Green and westbound towards Portsmouth Harbour. It was that low, I could clearly see its facial features as it passed by. Then the rain came back and another soaking! Apart from a probable Chiffchaff flying around the Sycamore trees, there were the usual birds seen or heard today, with up to 13 species seen today; the Peregrine being the last one noted.
In Hampshire today:
A Wood Sandpiper was back on the Stream area on Farlington Marshes and the juvenile Caspian Gull was back at Hill Head again off the Sailing Club plus a Fulmar lingering offshore. There was no sign of the Great Grey Shrike at Woolmer Pond today, but plenty of Redpolls present still.
