Sunday 25th September 2022.
I didn't go out birding today and mostly did household chores with my wife, however, I did see a few notable sightings during the day. Another glorious day of which early this morning, I topped up the sunflower hearts in the feeder, ready for another onslaught by the Sparrows. Overhead, small numbers of Meadow Pipits flew over, heading north again, but nothing else of note.
The Ivy plants attracted the usual Hoverflies, but among them, a Hornet-mimic Hoverfly dropped in and sat on the plants for a brief while until flying off. There seems to be good numbers of them currently this Autumn.
In Hampshire today, there was no sign of the Wryneck at Lepe Country Park, but a juvenile Red-backed Shrike was seen and photographed by a Birder at Smugglers Car Park, Burley in the New Forest today. Sadly, there seemed to be no further sighting of the bird later in the afternoon. On a better note, another juvenile Red-backed Shrike was found and present all day near the car park at Earnley, Medmerry RSPB Reserve, West Sussex.
